Saint Lucy, also known as Saint Lucia, was a Christian martyr from Syracuse, Sicily, who lived during the late third and early fourth centuries. According to tradition, she devoted herself to her faith from a young age and vowed to remain unmarried. When her family arranged a marriage against her wishes, she refused to abandon her beliefs and became a target of persecution.

Legends surrounding Saint Lucy tell of her extraordinary beauty, particularly her eyes, and describe how she endured suffering rather than renounce her Christian faith. Her story eventually established her as a symbol of devotion, courage and spiritual light. She is traditionally invoked for protection against eye diseases and is revered as a patron saint of the blind. She is also associated with glassmakers, glass cutters and seamstresses.
