2024 Czech Mint Christ the Redeemer 1/10 oz Gold Coin

The idea for a Christian monument overlooking Rio de Janeiro was first proposed in the 19th century, with the prominent Corcovado hill eventually selected as its home. The project was revived decades later by representatives of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, with the cornerstone laid in 1922 to commemorate the centenary of Brazil's independence from Portugal.

A competition was held that same year, bringing together Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald, French sculptor Paul Landowski and Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida. Over the following nine years, their work resulted in the monumental Art Deco statue that would become one of Brazil's most recognizable landmarks.

Standing approximately 30 metres tall on an 8-metre pedestal and positioned high above Rio de Janeiro, the statue depicts Christ with his arms extended in a welcoming gesture. The open arms have come to symbolize peace and acceptance, while the monument itself has become a pilgrimage destination, major tourist attraction and enduring symbol of Brazil.
